Bernard Quaritch Ltd. - South Audley Street

Bernard QuaritchBernard Quaritch Ltd. has been buying and selling rare books and manuscripts since 1847. Our founder, Bernard Quaritch, was born in 1819 near Göttingen in Germany. After working for booksellers in Nordhausen and Berlin, he set off for London in 1842, aged twenty-three. Quaritch knew no one there, but was armed with a letter of introduction to Henry Bohn, then London’s leading book dealer. Impressed by Quaritch’s persistence, Bohn took the young man on. Quaritch later recalled saying to his employer, “Mr Bohn, you are the first bookseller in England, I mean to become the first bookseller in Europe”. Bohn’s answer is not recorded, but Mrs Bohn, already impressed by Quaritch’s diligence, replied “I believe you will”.

Tim Bryars - Cecil Court

Tim Bryars Cecil CourtTim Bryars opened his antiquarian book and map shop in Summer 2004, returning to street level after some years selling books from a fourth floor office at Oxford Circus and communicating with the world electronically.

Traditional bookshops like ours allow for browsing and face-to-face discussion, and the chance to examine original material at first hand - all valuable opportunities which we would encourage customers to take up whenever possible. We believe that ground-floor retail is becoming, if anything, increasingly important, and in Autumn 2012 we opened Pinda Bryars Books at 7 Cecil Court.

Recent acquisitions, for example, include an immaculate sixteenth century herbal, Osip Mandelstam's rare first book, a collection of books by and about the Surrealists, a pristine first edition of The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes etc, etc. But please don't get the idea that the stock comprises nothing but the expensive and the stellar: we have prices to suit all pockets.

Fairs and Events

It looked like the sort of book described in library catalogues as "slightly foxed", although it would be more honest to admit that it looked as though it had been badgered, wolved and possibly beared as well.
