Antiques of the Orient was formed in 1981 by the late Michael J. Sweet and Ms Julie Yeo to retail Oriental works of art, particularly Chinese porcelain and furniture, and to a lesser extent, maps and prints. We started out in a small shop in the basement of Tanglin Shopping Centre where we remained until 1987, when we relocated to our present premises in a larger unit on the second floor. As time passed, our focus shifted from porcelain and furniture to antiquarian maps and prints.

Berkelouw Books is Australia’s largest rare and antiquarian bookdealer. Although we sell new books in our city stores, our business was built on the trade of rare and valuable books, and this remains at the heart of the Berkelouw operation.
Our Rare and Antiquarian Book Department, which houses over 40,000 items, is located on ‘Bendooley’, a property just north of Berrima in the beautiful Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The books, pamphlets and journals cover an extraordinary range of topics and periods forming a collection that will interest most book collectors. Latest Acquisition Catalogues are issued regularly and can be received as a printed item or as an email.

The Essendon Treasure Chest was established on May 28, 1965, at 127 Buckley Street, Essendon. It began as a joint venture between my parents, Les and Muriel Craddock, and myself - Kay Craddock. Our opening stock was a combination of secondhand books, bric-a-brac and handcrafts, and on our first day in business we sold twenty-six books for £28.00. These included a seven-volume set of Macaulay’s History of England, Darwin’s Origin of Species, Davidson’s The Great Pyramid, Revolt in the Desert by T. E. Lawrence and Why We Behave Like Human Beings by Dorsey. It did not occur to me, on that first day in business, to record the details of each book sold but I do remember they were all lovely copies. My father died on August 10, 1965, leaving me in a partnership with my mother that remains to this day.
