Greenwood, Walter. Love On The Dole. Cape 1933.
Superb presentation copy, INSCRIBED “To my dear Alice in remembrance of “all our yesterdays”. Walter. August 19th 1933”. Greenwood met Alice Myles in Pendlebury Co-Op and went out with her for some time. He was a frequent visitor to the family home, and the book was based to some extent on the Myles family. In particular, the central character of Harry Hardcastle was based on Alice’s brother Fred. When he became famous, Greenwood jilted her for an American screen actress, Pearl Osgood. Laid in are some newspaper clippings about Fred Myles, relating the story. An important association copy of this seminal novel of poverty and unemployment among the working classes. VG (slight tape offset marks to flyleaves) in dusty and browned scarce dustwrapper, which has has a little professional restoration
