Members are advised, for their own protection, to take notice of point 4 of the ABA Code of Good Practice (Stolen Property) and to record details of any transaction, using the ABA form or company stationery based on the ABA template. The name of the firm making the purchase, amount and method of payment (together with cheque number where applicable) and date of purchase may be recorded under "Notes" at the end of the form. Members are also advised to use this section of the form to record additional proof of identity and address of the seller (e.g. passport or driving licence number). The ABA already recommends that members make payments by cheque whenever possible but supporting information, showing that due diligence has been exercised, may well be of benefit to the bookseller if a dispute over title arises.
