New BMS Credit Card fraud prevention tool

Unless you know customers very well and have no doubts about their honesty, you should only ever send purchases to the billing address on the credit card.

Message from John Stovin - BMS Trade Association Manager: "I am delighted to inform you that we are shortly about to download a Fraud Prevention Tool (Card Security Service /AVS) to all customers who have a Barclaycard Business PDQ Terminal* Free of Charge. The CSC/AVS service enables members who undertake Card Not Present Transactions (CNP) to verify in the UK and Overseas that the card is in the hands of the genuine Cardholder (from the last 3 digits on the back of the Card) and that the address provided, in the UK only, is the Cardholders Registered Address (by matching the numbers of the address with the card issuer's data). This is undertaken by inputting the numbers into the PDQ terminal. As part of our commitment to reducing fraud Barclaycard Business will be downloading this service during October and November to all* "Bank Owned Terminals".

Thus with Chip & PIN preventing fraud in a Card Present environment and Card Security Service preventing fraud in the Card Not Present environment we will see a marked reductions in the overall levels of fraud. We will be communicating to all appropriate customers to inform them of this enhancement to their service, as well as how to operate the service. Those members who currently have the service and are paying the £10 monthly charge will have this charge removed with effect from the 1st of January 2006. Initially the Card Security Service will be set up so that if a member wishes to bypass the service they will be able to (although I cannot think of a good reason as to why they would wish to do so) however from 1st April 2006 Visa, MasterCard, and Maestro will be making the use of the CSC/AVS service mandatory on all CNP transactions.

* A very small number of older terminal types (Cardmate / Elite 710 Terminals) will not have the CSC/AVS service added, but we are in the process of replacing these."
