Anthony Smithson of the Keel Row Bookshop
I have been a full-time bookseller since 1990 when I opened a small bookshop at the age of nineteen. I have been an active member of the PBFA for nearly fifteen years and a member of the ABA for four, exhibiting at all three ABA fairs in the UK and many more countrywide with the PBFA. Since 2006 I have run the Keel Row Bookshop Ltd. in the North East of England.
In 2014 I set up and ran the York Antiquarian Book Seminar
. Based on the Colorado seminar of similar name, and funded jointly by the ABA Educational Trust, the ABA, and PBFA, the principal aim of the three-day seminar is to introduce a younger generation of would-be booksellers to the nuts and bolts of the profession. Thanks largely to the superb line-up of speakers the seminar was widely regarded as a success and will run once again in 2015. Recent successful efforts by the Council to stem the decline in membership and keep the ABA relevant to a younger generation of largely online booksellers are to be very much commended, and I see the York Seminar very much within this progressive programme.
If elected to Council I would endeavour to promote the standards of the Association and its Articles within the ABA as well as within the trade more broadly and serve the membership to the best of my ability. Despite nearly twenty-five years within the profession some might still consider me a relatively young bookseller, and I would hope that both my expertise and exuberance for the trade could be put to good use.
